Microsoft will officially end support for the Windows 10 operating system in October 2025. This change will significantly impact automation systems, particularly HMI/SCADA solutions, which often rely on Windows-based platforms. To avoid security risks, operational disruptions and regulatory non-compliance, users must prepare in advance for the transition.
In this article, we explain the challenges you may face after support ends and how upgrading your Proficy iFIX systems can help ensure greater security, improved functionality and long-term operational stability for your process systems.
What problems can you expect?
Once support is discontinued, HMI/SCADA systems still running on Windows 10 will be exposed to serious risks and limitations:
- Security threats: Without official updates, systems will be more vulnerable to cyberattacks such as ransomware, unauthorized access and other threats that could result in data loss, operational interruptions or even total system failure.
- Compatibility issues: HMI/SCADA system providers such as GE Vernova will stop offering updates and support for Windows 10 environments. As a result, newer updates and upgrades may no longer be compatible with your current setup, potentially making them unusable.
- Regulatory non-compliance: Industry standards such as IEC 62443 and ISO 27001 require secure and supported systems. Failure to meet these requirements can lead to legal and financial consequences, including sanctions and restrictions on obtaining or renewing certifications.
- Higher maintenance costs: Without official technical support from Microsoft, troubleshooting will become more expensive and complex. Support from third-party software vendors will also become less reliable and more costly.
Why should you upgrade your Proficy iFIX HMI/SCADA systems?
- Stronger security and protection
Upgrading your HMI/SCADA system gives you access to the latest security updates and technologies to defend against cyber threats, including:
- Implementation of modern security standards (e.g. data encryption, two-factor authentication)
- Reduced risk from vulnerabilities in older systems
Better protection of your industrial network from cyberattacks
- New functionalities for greater efficiency
The latest version of Proficy iFIX brings numerous improvements in system management and user experience:
- Centralized Management – Simplified configuration of remote (SCADA/Client) projects, fast deployment of project changes and centralized license management via a web interface.
- Equipment Modelling – Organizing data in a tree structure makes it easier to find variables, simplifies system management and ensures better control of devices.
- Proficy Authentication – Multi-factor authentication and Single Sign-On provide easier and more secure access to various GE Vernova systems.
- HTML5 SCADA Clients – Enable modern, flexible browser-based access with no additional installations.
- Built-in Analytics – Helps optimize production and speed up troubleshooting.
- Improved Reliability and Stability – Proficy iFIX 2024 delivers major enhancements in:
- Alarm processing and distribution (up to 50% faster during flood alerts)
- iFIX WorkSpace application startup – Optimized launch process for faster transition to Run mode and smoother performance in Remote Desktop and Webspace environments.
- Advanced analytics and artificial intelligence
New HMI/SCADA systems come with built-in templates for faster and easier implementation of advanced analytics, AI and machine learning in process (SCADA, Historian) systems:
- Alarm Pattern Recognition – Analyzes recurring alarm patterns to support better decision-making.
- PID Control Loop Performance Monitoring – Enables timely detection of issues in PID loops by monitoring their efficiency.
- AI/Machine Learning Templates – Pre-built templates help predict key process parameters, detect faults and identify potential failures (e.g. pumps, sensors, etc.).
Advanced analytics can boost productivity, reduce downtime and optimize your process systems.
- Avoiding obsolescence
Older HMI/SCADA system versions eventually lose manufacturer support. For instance, extended support for Proficy iFIX v6.1 and Proficy Historian v8.x will expire in January 2026, while older versions are already no longer supported.
Upgrading ensures your system remains supported in the long term, stays stable and complies with the latest technology standards. For additional protection, users can take advantage of the Proficy Acceleration Plan, which includes free license upgrades, the highest level of technical support, and access to expert assistance.
- Improved user experience and mobile support
Modern HMI/SCADA systems offer a more intuitive and efficient experience for operators, enabling faster data access and more informed decision-making, thanks to:
- Redesigned user interfaces with enhanced data visualization
- Mobile device support for remote monitoring and control
- Better UI adaptability across different devices (from large screens to tablets and smartphones)
- Simplified navigation and improved visibility of key information
Don’t delay the upgrade!
The end of support for Windows 10 is inevitable, but transitioning to a newer platform in time ensures security, stability and compliance with industry standards.
